East Kent College’s The Yarrow hotel is lining up for a new award

East Kent College’s recently opened Broadstairs hotel, The Yarrow, is lining up for more awards after being shortlisted for two in this year’s Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) awards, following its success at the recent Kent Design and Development Awards.

The annual awards showcase the achievements of the most inspirational regional initiatives and developments in land, property, construction and the environment. The awards are highly regarded in industry, with many considering them the premier property and construction awards in the UK. They bring together the most innovative projects in the region, awarding the very best entries across eight categories. This year The Yarrow is one of the finalists in two of those categories; Commercial, and Leisure and Tourism.

The building, which is part of East Kent College’s Broadstairs campus, was fully redeveloped to become a high-quality commercial hotel serving the needs of the growing tourism industry and the local community while providing an inspirational learning environment for the College’s catering and hospitality students.

Designed by Tonbridge based Richard Hopkinson Architects it incorporates commercial and training spaces, delivering an innovative approach to giving students the best possible experience to get them ready for the world of work.

Principal of East Kent College Graham Razey said: “The Yarrow has been one of the college’s biggest projects so far, but it was made far easier with the work done by our architects who followed a clear brief to create something special for our students, the local community and all those who visit. The result has been a spectacular hotel which has already gained a superb reputation, and is delivering an exceptional experience for our students.”

Richard Hopkinson, founding director of the multi-award winning practice Richard Hopkinson Architects, said: “We’re very proud to be part of a fantastic project making a unique difference to people and places in Kent.”

The winners will be announced at a ceremony on 17 May at the Aegeas Bowl in Southampton.
